For this part of the production stage, Skeleton Works have researched the costumes and the makeup for our film, The Invite. Below this paragraph will show inspiration for the antagonist of our film - this is where we will be observing characteristics such as body language, costume, makeup, personality, behavior, etc. - this also includes overall appearance. Images and Youtube clips portraying the antagonist, protagonist and other characters' costume and makeup will also be added in this section. Researching different costumes for the characters of our film will mean we will be prepared when it comes to creating our film trailer. Photos of the characters' costumes will be inserted along with a section of practicing using FX makeup. There will also be a characters section explaining who will be playing the antagonist, protagonist and supporting characters in the film. The characters' profiles will include their character's name, age, props and their iconic role. There will also be a section on the characters' profile explaining who they are, how they act and what they wear. The casts' costumes will portray who their character is in The Invite trailer.

Inspiration
These film trailers from YouTube have influenced the development of the antagonist, The Masked Killer - the costume, makeup, body language, personality and behavior have been well thought about. While observing these film trailers, we noticed that the antagonists have a few things in common: they all wear masks to hide their identity, they all kill, they all wear casual clothing, and they don't feel any remorse.

Below are inspiration photos for the mask of the antagonist. We will be adding FX makeup to the mask for that extra scary effect. We decided to look at (from left to right), Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, the masked killers from The Strangers, the masked killers from The Cabin in the Woods and Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
For the antagonist's mask, we wanted it to look real scary - something that will make our audience have nightmares at night. So below, are images all from the television show, American Horror Story. The images two images on the and middle are of Twisty the Clown, and the last image on the right is of Elizabeth Short (A.K.A The Black Dahlia) with a Chelsea smile. Although our antagonist doesn't play a clown, we decided to look at the details of his mask for inspiration for what we can do for our antagonist's mask.
FX Makeup Tutorials
These are the FX makeup tutorials that were found on YouTube. These tutorials will be used when creating the look for the antagonist - The Masked Killer and the other characters for The Invite. The Chelsea smile and the killer mask will be the main focus of the antagonist and the scars, cuts and bruises will be the main focus of the other characters.

Using FX Makeup
Since I have never used FX makeup before, it is crucial that I practice before the filming of the trailer. I bought things such as face paint, liquid latex, moulding wax, fake blood, a spatula and cosmetic sponges. Below shows photos of me practicing using FX makeup.
|
For this set of photos, I have used my younger sister as the model for the FX makeup.
As this was my first time using FX makeup, I thought I did rather well on making the open wounds look realistic, as well as the rest of Skeleton Works. For the open wounds I created on my younger sister, I used moulding wax to create the wound and a paintbrush and water to blend the wax in with her skin and make it appear a bit more soft in texture. Then, I used the other end of my paintbrush (it has a sharp end) to create the open wound, and I pushed both sides to make the wound larger. I used the spatula to blend the wax into her skin more so it looked realistic. After I was happy with the way it looked, I used red paint for the inside of the wound - I did this using a paintbrush. I also painted on top of the wound, so it looked more like it was her skin. After, I used a stippling sponge and red, purple and blue paint to create a bruising and irritated effect. I thought doing this would make the wounds look very believable. Lastly, I used thick fake blood, and ran it though the middle of the wound. This was to make it look like blood was pouring out of her. I notice that using FX makeup is time consuming and quite fiddly. The moulding wax gets sticky, and it transferred to the tools I was using. It was really annoying. I did the same technique for every fake wound in this set of pictures. I created wounds on her forehead, knuckles and her arm. I thought the best one was on her arm. It looked very believable. This same method will be used for the Skeleton Works film trailer; The Invite. |
The Masked Killer
For The Masked Killer, we knew what kind of mask we wanted him to have. At college we found a Jigsaw mask. This mask is of Tobin Bell who plays Jigsaw/John Kramer in the Saw Franchise. We really liked this mask because doing the FX makeup on this type of mask would be easier than doing it on a hard plastic mask. We want our antagonist to wear a mask because he needs to hide his identity. This is because he is one of the friends from the party.
Here is Josh, who plays the antagonist wearing the Jigsaw mask. Not being able to see his eyes will hide his identity even more. The mask fits him fine, and he will be able to act in it.
The Masked Killer's Costume
The Masked Killer's costume is a white t-shirt, jeans, white trainers, a mask and a butcher's knife. The reason why the antagonist's costume is like this is because he is supposed to be a teenager, the location of our film is at a party so everyone will be wearing casual clothing, and serial killers don't wear over the top costumes. We also chose a lot of white clothing because, we want the blood to show up perfectly on the camera, as opposed to wearing all black clothing where the blood will not be visible.

The Other Characters' Costumes
(Including the Protagonist)
There are 5 other characters in The Invite (in total, there are 6, including the antagonist). In the film trailers show below, the characters shown all play teenagers so they wear casual/everyday and stereotypical teen clothing - for example, tracksuits, hoodies, trainers, jeans, t-shirts, tartan shirts, etc. All the characters have different looks so they will be remembered as a specific character. In the trailers, the characters costumes need to look as realistic as possible to convince the audience that the actors are the same age as their characters, i.e. 17 and 18.
